Adam Smith, Therapist
Hi! I am a licensed psychologist with 11 years of experience in the mental health field. I was trained as a generalist and have practiced as such for most of my career. I have experience helping people of all ages from different backgrounds with a variety of presenting problems in several different settings.
I have the most experience working with adults to manage their stress and reduce anxiety and depression.
I do counseling, first and foremost, with a person-centered approach. That means I believe you are the expert on your life and ultimately you have the best answers to your problems; that you’ll realize your goals with the right kind of support from a counselor who is empathic, genuine, and unconditionally accepting.
I pride myself on being authentically non-judgmental and open to the perspectives of the people I work with and the thoughts and feelings they share with me. I also use a strengths-based approach in my counseling, focusing on what is right and good in your here and now, and how your positive qualities can be leveraged to move you toward a higher quality of life.
I draw a lot from existential theory as well, helping you explore your beliefs about the “big questions” in life and your values related to your purpose and meaning. However, being a counselor trained as a generalist in all the major theories and techniques of good psychotherapeutic practice, I’ll try to use any and all tools that might be helpful to you in achieving the life you want.
Taking the first step to sign up for therapy can take courage and I’m excited for you to get started!
